LED Sources - Downlighting

A luminaire's central purpose is to house a light source so that it can be used in a given environment. Luminaire manufacturers assess the characteristics of new light sources and find ways to deliver their benefits to consumers. Typically it is the lamp or luminaire manufacturer that strives to get customers to accept a new source.

LEDs have fallen outside this normal pattern, as they were created outside the R&D departments of major lamp manufacturers. Recent developments in technology advanced the humble LED from being an indicator light to being a potential source of illumination for the masses.

Stretching technology

An additional anomaly in the LED story is the fact that they already had consumer confidence. Most people have enjoyed years of uninterrupted service from LED indicators in their electronics such as hi-fi systems, whilst they repeatedly replaced burnt-out GLS, dichroic and fluorescent lamps. When news stories emerged of LED lamps being white, energy efficient and lasting for exceptionally long times, the demand for LED luminaires became very loud.

We have spent considerable effort to understand the LED source and its characteristics, and worked to create reliable luminaires that can deliver massive benefits to the marketplace.

We also understand that current Australian Standards are often written in ways that have not anticipated the workings of LED luminaires, leaving some benefits waiting in the wings.
