Portland Secondary College – Portland, Victoria
Portland Secondary College is a public co-educational school located on the South West Coast of Victoria which has been modernised via a $2M upgrade. The administration and S block buildings, consisting of staff facilities, library, and general learning spaces, were newly refurbished for staff as well as Year 7 & 8 students. The objective was to facilitate the transition from primary school to secondary school by better equipping younger students with the best of class facilities and learning tools on offer.
Versalux worked closely with the Victorian Schools Building Authority, Portland Secondary School, and 1:1 Architects to create a comprehensive lighting strategy for the entire renovated building. Embracing the client’s desires and the architect’s vision, the lighting solution has become one of the most recognisable features of the new building. The designer carefully selected luminaires that blend seamlessly between the colours and the high-quality environmental materials, while at the same time creating a new perspective for the younger year levels of Portland Secondary College.
In the classrooms, the versatile ASTI was selected as the sole luminaire series for its neat appearance, and contemporary lines, enabling the fixture to blend seamlessly into the ceiling line. ASTI LED panels are high-quality, emit optimum illumination, and work in harmony with the classroom requirements through uniform LED lighting with excellent visual comfort, aiding teachers and students to communicate and interact effectively in a comfortable, relaxing setting that inspires concentration. The colour characteristics of the ASTI’s LEDs were selected to increase student attention spans for a range of tasks such as quiet reading or collaborative group work.
In the hallways, the stylish COMO BLACK series of LED downlights demonstrate an elegant design that blends modern aesthetics with high-quality performance in a technologically advanced package. The COMO BLACK luminaires are recessed to blend effortlessly into the white ceiling, setting the interior tone to accentuate the new architectural elements whilst acting as an visual aid in transition between the multi-purpose spaces. COMO BLACK uses its multi-faceted refractor to optimum effect, producing a highly efficient distribution that emphasises the features in the yellow accent walls and grey carpet surfaces. The COMO BLACK fixtures ensure that the path is unobtrusively illuminated in a way that draws teachers, students and visitors to a dynamic and uplifting environment.
Timelessly chic VENICE PENDANT’s are suspended in a simple array, simultaneously creating a visual feature and illuminating the framework of the breakout spaces. The VENICE PENDANT works in tandem with the building’s clever use of natural light through large asymmetrical windows, harmoniously combining and enhancing the feeling of space in an attractive light. The high-quality VENICE PENDANT luminaires are the perfect match for a vibrant interior design that allows the overall illumination to be balanced, appearing to be distinctly spacious, brightly coloured and comfortable for all.
