The new Westmead Hospital was designed with a vision to be a patient-centred care facility. The construction of the new state-of-the-art building is one of Sydney’s largest hospital redevelopment projects with a $900 million investment made by the state government, providing world-class healthcare facilities to serve Western Sydney and the wider community.

The Westmead Hospital building is built on more than 95,000 square meters of land, delivering both adult and paediatric services, including emergency care, pharmacy, imaging, advanced operating suites, and multi-patient facilities, aiming to provide a holistic and positive environment that promotes health and wellbeing.

The project saw Versalux partner with HDR and Multiplex to create a tailored lighting solution that met the client’s exacting brief. All parties worked together to integrate premium lighting systems into the modern hospital’s design, meshing with the latest medical technology on offer to support and satisfy the needs of patients, visitors, and medical professionals in all areas of the facility.

The INFINITI series is a high performance extruded linear LED fixture, which was side-mounted against triangular acoustic baffles in a diagonal pattern to emphasise the bold aesthetic. The distinctive architecture feature is the highlight of the foyer, forming a feel-good, welcoming area replete with light finishes and sleek colours associating positively with visits to this modern hospital.

The INFINITI’s opalescent optics produce superb vertical illumination for a well-balanced and comfortable environment as an inviting impression across work and movement sectors of the hospital, for patients, medical professionals, and visitors to move between rooms and facilities within the space. As the primary light source for the common gathering and social meeting spot, the INFINITI series augments the natural illumination provided by large glass windows during the day, and proficiently meets the lighting requirements of the space at night.

The NICO overbed series provide a robust and technologically advanced solution for bed locations in medical and aged-care facilities. The NICO luminaires’ DALI controlled dual optics provide smooth transition between direct and indirect illumination levels, and features a night-light mode. The NICO luminaires provide excellent coverage for direct illumination over a patient’s bed, and pleasant uplight for reading and general illumination. NICO luminaires are IP44 rated, and are suitable for hygienic cleaning of the fixture for minimal maintenance requirements.

The stylish, slimline TRIXIE series is also installed as a wall mounted luminaire under each emergency room bed, working in tandem with the NICO fixtures with its low-glare optics for unobtrusive illumination of the floor area at night.
